Question About Stanford Admissions Process : Elite University
We were recently asked the following question about the Stanford admissions process: “How hard is it to get into Stanford for computer science?”
Getting into Stanford is very difficult, whether you are applying for undergraduate or an advanced degree. Stanford is one of the top universities in the world and has an acceptance rate below 5% — for every student that is accepted, about 20 are rejected. Thus, Stanford does not admit “great” applicants; they admit the best of the best applicants. As a computer science student, I’d recommend pursuing internships in the industry, as this is a great extracurricular to add to your resume.
Obviously, you need strong grades and test scores to get accepted. It’ll be nearly impossible to get into Stanford with a 1200 SAT score or a 3.4 GPA. Your letters of recommendation (LORs), extracurricular activities, awards/honors and essays are also extremely important, as these factors help differentiate your application, allowing you to stand out in the competitive Stanford admission process.
What can I do to get into Harvard?
Question from a high school student: What can I do to get into Harvard (Elite University Admissions) if I have low freshman and sophomore year grades?
Remember that grades are only one of many factors in the college admissions process. Additionally, your senior and junior year grades are more important than your freshman and sophomore year grades. Obviously, you’d rather have your grades on an “uptrend” as opposed to a “downtrend.”
Of course, if you have all Ds and Cs during your first two years of high school, it’ll be nearly impossible to get into a top-tier school, but it’s absolutely fine to have a few “Bs” and maybe even a C during your first two years. Other factors such as recommendations, extracurriculars, and essays can help make up for poor grades.
Get in touch with us by filling out the form below! Whether you need your college applications edited or a research mentor from Stanford University to help you with an Intel ISEF project, we are here to help you reach your potential.
What can I do to get into Harvard is not an easy question to answer. You can find more information about college admissions at Elite University Admissions.
What can I do to get into Stanford?
Be unique. Of course, you want your grades and test scores as high as possible, but extracurricular activities, essays, and recommendations pull much more weight in the admissions process at Elite University Admissions. Thus, you should think about how you can differentiate yourself and stand out.
As an example, if you are passionate about Chemistry, you could start a chemistry club at your school, tutor young students in Chemistry, compete in science fairs, win Chemistry Olympiads, etc. Do what the typical student would not.
Get into Harvard as an International Student : Elite University Admissions
Be amazing at something: Harvard doesn’t accept “average” applicants — it’s one of the best schools in the entire world. Thus, to get into Harvard as an international student, you need to be amazing. It’s really that simple. You could be a world-class musician, a star athlete, a top engineering student, etc. At the core, you need to be amazing to get into Harvard.
Great grades, test scores, essays, etc. — Start writing your essays early, and aim for high SAT/ACT scores and grades. Although a perfect 4.0 GPA and 1600 SAT won’t guarantee admission to Harvard, it’ll be nearly impossible to get in with a 2.9 GPA and 1050 SAT.
Get into Stanford with Low GPA : Elite University Admissions
The college admissions process is holistic in nature, and grades are just one factor in the process. Thus, a few mediocre grades shouldn’t change much.
Remember, letters of recommendation, essays, extracurricular activities, and standardized test scores (SAT/ACT/Subject Tests) are all vital factors in the college admissions process. Focus on the three things below and you’ll be in good shape when college applications come around.
- Keep your grades & test scores up
- Build strong relationships with your teachers
- Pursue quality extracurriculars (not quantity!)
Asian American College Admissions – The Truth
Asian American College Admissions – Asian Americans are consistently discriminated against in the college admissions processes at elite universities. Here are some tips to getting in.
- Writing well-thought-out college essays
- Structure
- First, outline an event/experience that changed your life
- Second, describe how this event/experience made you change your way of thinking
- Third, outline what you did in high school because of this event/experience
- Finally, write why you need to go to Columbia to continue to pursue this activity
- An example from my life…
- My dad got cancer when I was a freshman in high school
- This made me realize the negative effects that cancer has on a family, and I made it my life goal to help cure cancer.
- I pursued a variety of research projects in Chemistry & Biology, and I won a few awards at major science competitions, including the Siemens Competition.
- I need to attend MIT because this is the best research institution in the world.
- Pursue quality extracurriculars (NOT quantity) — Interesting extracurricular activities are the best way to stand out in the college admissions process.
- Build strong relationships with your teachers — Many applicants underestimate the importance of letters of recommendation (LORs), but they shouldn’t! LORs are vital in the admissions processes at elite universities. Thus, make sure your teachers love you! Stay after class to ask questions, etc.
Get into Dartmouth or Another Elite U.S. University :
- Build strong relationships with your teachers — Many students underestimate the importance of letters of recommendation (LORs), but they shouldn’t! My MIT admissions officer actually told me that LORs are one of the most important factors in their admissions process, as recommendations help separate the great students from the good students.
- Write well-thought-out essays — It always amazes me how some applicants start writing their college essays during winter break, just a few weeks before the deadline. You want to start your essays early, so you have time to get each essay reviewed by teachers, family members, etc.
- Pursue quality extracurriculars — Quality is much more important than quantity in terms of extracurricular activities. You want to be amazing at one or two activities, as this will help you stand out in the Dartmouth application process.
- Overall, Dartmouth is one of the top universities in the world, so you need to prove to the admissions committee that you are a one-of-a-kind student to get accepted. Best of luck with the rest of high school and the college application process!
How to Get Into Brown or Another Top-Tier University
Build great relationships with your teachers — Many applicants underestimate the importance of letters of recommendation (LORs), but they shouldn’t! My MIT admissions officer actually told me that LORs are one of the biggest factors in their admissions decisions, as LORs help separate the great students from the good students.
Get your grades & standardized test scores up — Grades and test scores aren’t everything, but it’ll be nearly impossible to get into Brown or any other elite university with a 1050 SAT and 3.1 GPA.
Pursue interesting extracurriculars — Brown is one of the top universities in the U.S. Thus, you need to be a top student to get in. Great extracurriculars can help you stand out in the application process.
Start your essays early — It always amazes me that some students begin to write their essays over winter break, just a few weeks before the deadline. Don’t do this! You want time to brainstorm different ideas and get your essays reviewed by teachers, family members, etc.
Preparing for College Application Tips :
- Grow your relationships with your teachers — Many students seem to underestimate the importance of letters of recommendation in the application process, but they shouldn’t! My MIT admissions officer actually told me that letters of recommendation are one of the most important factors in their admissions process, as recommendations help separate the great students from the good students. Thus, build strong relationships with your teachers!
- Pursue your passion — Quality is much important than quantity in terms of extracurriculars. Thus, develop the extracurricular you are most passionate about. For example, if you love science, math or technology, try to complete a research project. This would allow you to compete in the major science competitions, such as Intel ISEF, Intel STS, iGEM, the Siemens Competition, or the Junior Science & Humanities Symposia (JSHS). Even better, if your teacher is a mentor for your research project, then you’ll have a science research project and grow a stronger relationship with this teacher.
